Résumé : |
This dissertation discusses a highly significant problem that had a momentous effect on
American history during the civil rights movement. Indeed, school segregation had existed for
a long time till the appearance of the landmark decision; Brown v. Board of Education. This
crucial decision was declared on May 17, 1954 and is considered as a turning point in the
history of Black Americans education. It stated that school segregation was unconstitutional
and it succeeded to overturn the separate but equal doctrine that had been legalized in the case
of Plessy v. Ferguson, 1896. That famous case was considered as a mirror that reflected the
real situation of the African Americans in all fields. It also proved that segregation was based
on race only. Brown decision was also able to denounce the poor conditions of the African
Americans’ education and to show the awful domination of the Jim Crow laws over the Black
Americans’ lives and psychological state. Brown decision contributed to a large extent to
change African Americans’ attitudes and feelings, and to encourage them to fight in order to
enjoy the same equal rights as whites |
