Résumé : |
The aim of our study is to identify the commonest types and the likeliest causes of students’
spelling errors, at the department of letters and English language Mentouri-University, so as
to measure how much progress students achieve in spelling proficiency as they move to
higher grades. Indeed, the present work hypothesize that English University students’
spelling proficiency is not improving as they move to higher grades level mainly because of
the irregularity and the complexity of the English spelling System. To carry out this research
and confirm our hypothesis, we administer a questionnaire to written Expression teachers and
we analyze students’ exam papers. The results of the data obtained from both the
questionnaire and the papers’ analysis reveal that students’ spelling errors are caused by
different factors such as: spelling irregularity, the limited knowledge of orthography, and the
influence of the mother tongue. Moreover, we find that there are six types of errors which
University students fall into committing during the process of learning English. As a result, it
can be noticed that learners are not improving during the three first years of the L.M.D
system. |
