Résumé : |
The Watergate scandal is one of the most famous political scandals throughout the United
States modern history. The United States President Richard Nixon and his White House
staff’s involvement in the Watergate scandal led to his resignation and the sentence of his
closest aides and advisors. The Watergate crisis created a deep gap between American
citizens and their federal government and seriously questioned the American principles of
democracy in the United States and abroad. The Watergate scandal had a great impact on
American political affairs throughout the past four decades. Congress passed a series of new
laws and reforms and enforced some previous acts in order to reassert its power and authority
over the presidential institution’s powers, put an end to political corruption and abuses, and
restore the Americans’ trust in their federal government. Although The Watergate scandal
damaged the image of the presidential institution and American lawyers, it was a significant
evidence that there is no one- even the president- above the law in the United States |
