Résumé : |
Learners are affected by many factors in second/foreign language learning process. The level
of cognitive development, cultural background notably, the parents’ intellectual level, and the
ability to acquire a language, can be said to be among the important factors that can affect
learners’ achievements. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of some sociocultural variables, notably, the parents’ educational level on second-year LMD students, at
Mentouri University Constantine 1. We hypothesized that the students with educated parents
were likely to do better in their studies than those with less educated parents. To discuss all
this and check our hypothesis, a questionnaire was elaborated and given to a group of second
year students to complete. The purpose of this questionnaire was to distinguish the students
with educated parents from the others. Once this was done, it was possible to compare this
with the students’ averages of the first term. The results of the questionnaire and the students’
averages revealed that there was a significant but not very big difference between the two
groups of students. In fact, the students who lived in an educated family did slightly better
than the other students. This, in our opinion, may be due to the fact that other factors, such as
motivation and individual effort, are also important in success or failure in studies |
