Résumé : |
The main purpose of this research is to explore difficulties in translating religious vocabulary
from Arabic to English and their causes. To achieve this aim, the researcher has designed a
translation test and a questionnaire. The test consists of Arabic terms and sentences extracted
from sermons. The questionnaire consists of nine questions related to translation in general and
religious translation in particular. The sample of the study is composed of 22 students
specialised in Translation Studies at Annaba University. The results reveal that students
commit a number of mistakes in translating sermons vocabulary. The causes of such mistakes
vary, among them: Students perceive religious translation as a difficult field, this perception
affects their performance negatively, they do not master the methods and techniques of
translation, they luck vocabulary in the Target Language (TL), and students are over cautious
regarding this type of translation because of its religious aspect. The study recommends that
students should exercise extra effort to learn about the culture of the TL, they should practice
religious translation, and there should be a focus in the curriculum on the techniques and
methods of translation. |
