Résumé : |
The present study is conducted to explore a significant issue that encounters learners of English
in translation, which is the problem of false friends as a consequence of the negative transfer of
language. This investigation is an illustration on how third year students of English at the
department of English faculty of letters and English language University of Frères Mentouri
Constantine 1 deal with this linguistic phenomenon, when they translate from French into
English and vice versa. In order to collect our data, thirty students are involved to answer a
questionnaire and translate literary text. The questionnaire and test aim at determining whether
students have an idea of what false friends mean, and avoiding transfer of elements from one
language into another through identifying the similarities and the differences between them.
From the results obtained, we have noticed that the majority of third year students are victims of
false friends due to their tendency of transferring elements from the source language into the
target one. As false friends represent a source of confusion for students of English, some
recommendations are suggested to raise students‟ awareness towards this serious problem, and
produce an appropriate translation of literary texts. |
