Résumé : |
EFL learners tend to face difficulties in comprehending scientific texts, especially when they are
full of technical terms or when the topic is unfamiliar to them. However, being knowledgeable
about rhetorical functions may assist students to understand scientific register by showing them
the different logical relationships between the ideas presented in the print. Accordingly, the
present study aims at investigating teachers’ perceptions of the role of rhetorical functions in
enhancing EFL learners’ comprehension of scientific text. It is hypothesized that being
knowledgeable about the different rhetorical functions could assist EFL learners in a better
understanding of scientific texts. To achieve the aim of the study, a questionnaire was assigned
to 15 teachers of English for Specific Purposes (ESP)/English for Science and Technology
(EST) at the Department of letters and English language, University of frères Mentouri
Constantine 1. The findings obtained from the analysis of the questionnaire have shown that
teachers highly believe in the significance of rhetorical functions for the comprehension of
scientific texts stating that being knowledgeable about the different rhetorical functions could
assist them in a better understanding of scientific discourse. Hence, teachers are highly
recommended to introduce their learners to the different rhetorical functions and to sustain their
lectures with exercises about them. |
