Writing is among the challenging and complex tasks for English as a foreign language
students, this is why many students face difficulties to produce an adequate piece of writing.
The present study aims at investigating the attitudes of both teachers and students towards the
use of formative assessment as an evaluation to enhance students’ achievement in writing.
The main aim then is to determine whether the students’ writing achievement would be
enhanced when using formative assessment. It is hypothesis that if teachers assessed students
formatively, students’ writing skill would be improved. To test this hypothesis, two
questionnaires are used to collect data.The first questionnaire is administered to Written
Expression Teachers, and the second questionnaire is given to second year students at the
department of English at university “Frères Mentouri”, Constantine 1. The research findings
have shown that the teachers and students hold positive attitudes towards the use of formative
assessment as an evaluation to enhance the writing achievement of students. Most of the
teachers see that the level of their students is average they are aware that through using
formative assessment their students’ level would be better. Furthermore, Students are aware
of this process, and they support it to be used in the classroom by their teachers of Written
