Speaking English is doubtless essential nowadays since it is a globally
recognized language in almost all fields. Thus, if we want learners of English as
a Foreign Language to be fluent and good at speaking, we first should encourage
them to practise with an eye towards improvement. Second, we must elevate the
students’ awareness and introduce them to the great importance that the speaking
skill has in developing their language. The purpose of this work is, then, to
explore the effectiveness of using authentic videos to improve the speaking skill.
The main threefold objectives of the work are identifying the role of authentic
videos which can promote learner's speaking skill, discussing the main problems
which may hinder the oral performance and lastly investigating learner's
attitudes towards those videos. To reach this end, the case study research was
conducted at the University Frères Mentouri, Constantine at the department of
English language, relying on a questionnaire as an instrument of research. The
analysis of the results reveals that First Year English students are more aware
and mindful about the importance of authentic videos to improve their oral
proficiency. From another perspective, teachers of English as a Foreign
Language agree that using those videos is one of the most effective and
beneficial tools to reinforce the students' speaking, which confirms our
hypothesis that the use of authentic videos can improve the learners’ speaking
skill. |
