This study aims at finding out whether speech fillers promote the students speaking skill, and
to check whether teachers teach speech fillers and think they are helpful. We hypothesize that
if learner are taught speech fillers, their speaking skill will be improved and therefore they
will avoid breakdowns wherever they produce the foreign language. In order to test the
validity of the hypothesis, two questionnaires and a test were carried out: the first was
completed by forty students of second year LMD students in the English Department at
Constantine 1 University; the second one was completed by fourteen teachers of oral
expression in the same Department. However, the test has been conducted in the form of
interview, and has been achieved to ten students in order to see if the participants use speech
fillers during spontaneous speech. The results obtained from the both questionnaires and the
test showed the role and the value of speech fillers in improving the students speaking skill |
