songs oral proficiency quasi-experimental study |

Résumé : |
The English language teaching realm is rich with various methods and techniques for different
skills. This study tries to shed light on the use of songs as a teaching method to develop
students’ speaking skill. In this respect, we hypothesise that using songs would improve third
year students’ speaking performance, and thus enhance their oral proficiency. This research
intends to explore and examine the influence of songs used in classrooms on learners’
speaking skill. This quasi-experimental study deals with a sample of 40 students at the
University of Guelma 08 Mai 1945; 20 students as a treatment group and the other 20 as a
control group. A questionnaire administered to both groups is the first research tool used in
order to investigate both their level of oral proficiency and their attitudes regarding the use of
songs in classrooms. Pre and post-tests are the second research tool used in order to evaluate
their level of oral proficiency before and after the experiment. Regrettably, we were able to
pre-test them only. The results showed that third year EFL students suffer mainly from poor
vocabulary knowledge. This only leads to orally inept students with a low oral proficiency.
Songs nevertheless seem to motivate them and enrich their vocabulary. This research needs
further investigation to elaborate our hypothesis in order to obtain more detailed results, and
hence draw sound conclusions |
