Résumé : |
In the sphere of second/foreign language learning, it is widely acknowledged that vocabulary
is an indispensable part of the four language skills. For second language (ESL) or foreign
language (EFL) learners, vocabulary is one of the most important language elements that
support the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. In this respect, vocabulary
knowledge plays a pivotal role in language learning proficiency. Therefore, lack of
vocabulary will cause problems to the learners in their quest to acquire English. The present
study aims at investigating the attitude of second year students at the Department of English at
Mentouri University towards the use of four vocabulary learning strategies, namely dictionary
look up, guessing from the context, note taking and asking the teacher or classmates. It also
aims at identifying the students’ most preferable learning strategy in expanding their
vocabulary knowledge. Therefore, it is hypothesized that learners would have a positive
attitude towards the four target vocabulary learning strategies. To verify the hypothesis of the
present study, a questionnaire and a test were administrated to thirty second -year students to
investigate their attitudes towards the aforementioned strategies. The results obtained show
the students’ positive attitudes towards using the four target vocabulary learning strategies.
Furthermore, the findings from the present research indicate that students mostly prefer using
‘dictionary look up’ and ‘guessing from the context’ to facilitate vocabulary learning over the
other remaining strategies. |
