This study aims at investigating the freshmen students’ difficulties in using both of the
semicolon and the comma marks and the reasons behind misusing it in their writing. For this
purpose, it is assumed that Freshmen EFL students face problems when using the semicolon
and comma in their writing due to their lack of attention and knowledge. In the light of this, a
teachers’ questionnaire is used as means of research to obtain the causes behind these problems,
and it was administered to a total sample of eight Written Expression teachers from the
department of English at Frères Mentouri university, Constantine 1. The findings revealed that
students’ misuse of the semicolon and comma is mostly related to their lack of practice of
punctuation rules outside the classroom and transmitting forms of punctuations of their mother
tongue |
