Résumé : |
Translation is a very hard task, especially when it occurs between two different family
languages like Arabic and English. The present study aims at investigating whether students’
translation reflects their awareness of the linguistic and cultural differences between both
languages and if they could overcome the challenges that may occur while translating or not.
In fact, we hypothesized that despite the fact that third year students have already studied
translation in their second year, they still face many challenges due to their unawarness of the
linguistic and cultural differences between Arabic and English. In this research, fifteen
students from the Department of Letters and the English Language at the University of Frères
Mentouri served as a sample and they were chosen randomly from three groups. This study is
based on one instrument which is testing. The informants were asked to answer an online test
which consists of nine sentences, a piece of a poem and a Prophetic saying. All the texts are
from Arabic and English with different subjects. After analysing the strategies used and the
mistakes made by the subjects in their production, it is revealed that although third year
students have a background knowledge about translation, they still unable to overcome all the
challenges that are due to the linguistic and cultural differences between Arabic and English
and need more practice on Arabic-English-Arabic translation. This confirms that the
previously mentioned hypothesis is achieved. |
