Résumé : |
This dissertation analyzes the notion of the other in two works of the renowned American writer
Carson McCullers: The Ballad of the Sad Café and The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. First, it begins
by introducing otherness as an independent concept. Then, by discussing multiple critical views
on this subject, it eventually arrives at the indication that the other is a socially constructed concept
that defines the underprivileged members of society who do not belong to the category of the most
powerful status. This conclusion brings forth a reopening of debates concerning race and ethnicity,
gender and sexuality, and disability. The research ultimately reaches its practical phase when the
concepts previously explored are applied to characters from the two works of Carson McCullers—
characters who have been repeatedly denoted freaks. The freaks are examined thoroughly and
categorized by means of the theories mentioned in the first chapter. The detailed interpretations
finally result in the idea that the freakishness of McCullers’s characters (and McCullers herself) is
essentially only a consequence of the complex notion of otherness constructed by the southern
society. |
