Résumé : |
The current study is conducted to investigate teachers’ perceptions and practices of the use of
Arabic to help Middle School pupils learn and attain the vocabulary of English as a FL. To the
best of our knowledge, this topic forms a real gap due to its debatable nature. Being an
exploratory study in nature, this study aspires to fill in this gap by: 1) exploring the perception
of teachers, and 2) unveil their practices regarding the incorporation of Arabic to teach English
vocabulary to Middle School pupils. In the pursuit of this endeavor, a questionnaire is
administered to 15 Middle School teachers. The findings have shown that: 1) the majority of
teachers have rejected the use of Arabic to teach the vocabulary of English despite the
beginner’s level of the learners, and 2) they believe that there are other alternatives to teach the
FL vocabulary rather than resorting to Arabic. In the light of the findings, the study
recommends a judicious use of Arabic in EFL classes particularly that learners need to practice
the target language as much as possible, thus, Arabic should be used only when it is necessary
in order to increase students’ opportunities to encounter the English language. |
