Résumé :	Idioms are considered as one of the most mysterious areas in intercultural exchanges. Many researches have dealt with this area, because it constitutes a problem to many students who want to learn a new language, but they lack the cultural background of that language. This study aimed at investigating the importance of mastering idiomatic expressions in developing the students’ intercultural understanding. For this reason, a hypothesis was put to check whether learning a significant number of idioms would improve the students’ intercultural competence. In this respect, two questionnaires were administrated to both teachers and students to report their opinions and attitudes regarding the importance of idioms in enhancing the students’ intercultural understanding. The study was conducted with Master students of Foreign Language Didactic at Mentouri University/Constantine, as well as teachers of English at the same department. The results of the study showed that most of the students and teachers agree that idiomatic expressions can really help students in enhancing their cultural competence level. In other words, the hypothesis set for this study was confirmed, and therefore, one can conclude that idioms are very important to develop intercultural competence.
