The present study is conducted to test the awareness of 2nd year EFL students at the Frères
Mentouti Constantine 1 University of the differences in high and low context communication
styles between their culture and the American one. This work is an attempt to diagnose the
problematic areas and the difficulties students face when holding an intercultural
communication with native speakers of the language they are learning, with the objective of
finding solutions to develop their intercultural and cross-cultural skills and not just their
linguistic skills. Therefore, we hypothesize that 2nd year EFL students at the Frères Mentouri
Constantine 1 University are not aware of the communicative differences of high and low
context existing between their culture and the American one. In an attempt to test the validity
of the hypothesis, a sample of fifty 2nd year EFL learners from the Department of English,
Frères Mentouri Constantine 1 University is chosen; a test is used as means to collect the data
needed. The results obtained from the test and its two main tasks are analysed and compared;
the outcomes support the hypothesis. The results have showed students’ lack of awareness
when it comes to the communicative differences of high and low context and denial of their
existence in the first place. Hence, students need a more cultural and communicative based
approach to learning English to enable them to better understand both their own culture and
that of the language they are leaning and to help grow their intercultural communicative skills
alongside the linguistic ones. |
