Résumé : |
This research study investigates the difficulties encountered by second-year students of
English at the University of Frères Mentouri, Constantine 1 in using the perfect simple tenses
in their grammar classroom assignments. It also attempts to identify the reasons behind
committing mistakes in the use of these specific tenses. For this purpose, it is hypothesized that
second-year students of English do not know when to put the right perfect simple tense in the
right situation because of ignorance of the rules and lack of practice. In light of this, two
questionnaires have been used for the students and teachers. The aim of the students’
questionnaire is to gather information about the students’ knowledge and attitudes toward the
perfect simple tenses. The aim of the teachers’ questionnaire is to identify the reasons behind
these difficulties and the reasons behind making mistakes in the use of these tenses. The
results of the analysis revealed that the majority of the students found it challenging to deal
with the English perfect simple tenses. Both of the participants find that PSTs are
tremendously problematic and difficult to learn mainly because of lack of practice, ignorance of
the rules. Thus, the hypothesis is confirmed, emphasizing the fact that the students misuse the
perfect simple tenses because of the reasons mentioned above. |
