Résumé : |
We attempt to examine the effects of audio-visual aids in enhancing the speaking and the
listening skills of EFL learners. In order to answer this question the researcher adopts for a
descriptive method that is based on four tools of research: a questionnaire, a classroom
observation, listening and speaking tests. The questionnaire is submitted to a representative
sample of first year students of English at Mentouri University Constantine 1. The
questionnaire focuses on investigating the students‟ attitudes towards the use of audio-visual
aids. In addition, the classroom observation is established to attain more exact and precise
data about the students‟ awareness and attitudes towards the language and the use of audiovisual aids, plus an observation of their speaking and listening levels. The listening test was
set in order to examine the learners‟ listening skill and to check whether they are able to
understand the natives‟ different accents, or not. Likewise, the speaking test, which was taken
in the form of a debate, exhibited the learners‟ speaking competences and their vocabulary
repertoire. The present research work is grounded on the hypothesis that as much as students
are exposed to audio-visual aids, their listening and speaking skills will be enhanced. The
results of the present study indicate that freshmen LMD students of English at Mentouri
University Constantine 1 are aware about the importance of the audio-visual aids and show
positive attitudes towards their use and implementation in the curriculum designed to teach
oral expression. However, the learners faced many linguistic and paralinguistic challenges. In
addition to that, the learners need to concentrate and practice more in order to improve their
speaking and listening performances. All in all, the learners have a good level in English
regardless of the challenges they have encountered. The findings of this study confirm our
research hypothesis which emphasizes the positive effects of utilizing the audio-visual
materials in teaching both the speaking and listening skills. By identifying the main areas of
IV

difficulties, teachers as well as learners will be able to design and chose the most appropriate
tools to teach the language skills. |
