Résumé : |
Joseph Heller’s novel Catch-22 (1961) shows a grim and absurd world that. Using
dark humor, and a paranoid absurd antihero to demonstrate the absurdities of war, authority,
and life in general. This mixture of dark humor combined with modern philosophies,
nihilism, absurdism, and existentialism, is used heavily today in mainstream television shows
and movies. This thesis aims at exploring the specific humor, one that uses incongruity, and
absurdist philosophy in Catch-22 to get a better understanding on why is this novel along
with others similar to it, written in the same period of time by other authors like John Barth,
and Kurt Vonnegut are more celebrated, appreciated, and imitated today. As a result, it
clarifies that the humor in Catch-22 is mostly absurdist, the aim is not to the comedic effect
but to push the reader to think about the absurdity of life at large. A reason why this is used
more today can be generational, meaning that the latest generation, Gen z, cannot live in
ignorant bliss, as all their life’s biggest questions are a Google search away. These results
can clarify, to a certain degree, the questions asked and hopefully expand the understanding
of the novel |
