Learning English is considered to be a complex task, especially for non native speakers. Thus,
one of the most challenging issues that confront teachers while teaching English as a foreign
language is how to arouse their pupils’ interest towards learning it. This latter is the focal
point of our study. This research is carried out to investigate Middle school teachers’ attitudes
towards first year pupils’ interest in learning English as a foreign language. It aims at
knowing which strategies are supposed to be used by teachers in order to stimulate pupils’
interest during the learning process of the English language. Therefore, in order to find
adequate responses to this inquiry and test our hypothesis, twelve teachers of English at
different middle schools in El-Khroub – Constantine, were randomly chosen to be involved as
participants in this research. They were chosen to provide answers to a questionnaire which
was the single research instrument used in this study. The collected data was analyzed
quantitatively. The obtained results reveal that a number of techniques are supposed to be
applied by teachers in order to make their pupils interested in learning English. In other
words, teachers ought to centre their attention on choosing the right strategies to perform that
will help them better stimulate their first year pupils to effectively learn English as a foreign
language. |
