Résumé : |
English modal verbs are an important grammatical category which is different from other
types of auxiliaries and lexical verbs. This difference makes them difficult and confusing for
EFL students. Thus, this research work aims at investigating the use of modal verbs by
Algerian second year students of English at Frères Mentouri University, Constantine 1, to see
if they use modal auxiliary verbs effectively or they face difficulties in learning and using
them. Therefore, it was hypothesized that students would fail to use modal verbs appropriately
to express modality as they are not aware of their importance. In order to check the validity of
the hypothesis, a questionnaire and a test are used to collect data from 30 second year
students. The results of the data collected reveal that the students face difficulties in the use of
modal verbs and they avoid using them whenever possible; they used other periphrastic
expressions instead. Moreover, the students show a negative performance in the use of modal
verbs and they are struggling with the nuances of meanings of modals, so they cannot choose
the appropriate modals easily, which proved that the acquisition of modal verbs is not easy as
it seems. Therefore, this study has answered the questions that we asked, and it proves that
modal verbs form a serious problem to students in the acquisition of the English grammar |
