Résumé : |
Learning English is a difficult task for most foreign language learners particularly when it
comes to learning vocabulary. Since vocabulary is important for communication, writing, and
reading, learners need to apply effective strategies to enrich their vocabulary repertoire not
only to understand English, but also to easily express themselves both in oral and written
form, but, they often find problems to do so. One of the most effective skills to learn
vocabulary is regular reading. The reading skill contains many types, one of the most
effective types is reading for pleasure. Reading for pleasure is known to be important in
language learning, because it enables students to increase their level of understanding the
language, acquiring, and learning vocabulary and language structures. However, many
learners of English as a foreign language are either not aware of the important role of reading
for pleasure in developing vocabulary or do not give it much importance among the other
skills. This study aims at investigating the role of reading for pleasure in enhancing English as
a foreign language learners’ vocabulary for second year students at the Department of Letters
and English at Frères Mentouri Constantine 1 University. To examine the validity of our
hypothesis, in the sense that if learners of English as a foreign language read for pleasure,
they would increase their vocabulary repertoire; we have administered one questionnaire for
the teachers of different subjects at the Department of Letters and English at Frères Mentouri
Constantine 1 University. The teachers’ questionnaire was administered to 20 teachers, so as
to explore their attitudes towards the role of reading for pleasure in developing EFL learners’
vocabulary. The obtained results from the teachers’ questionnaire showed that our hypothesis
was confirmed. The respondents agreed that reading for pleasure is an effective way to learn a
large amount of words. Besides that, many teachers claimed that reading is the best skill
v
compared to the other skills to solve students’ vocabulary problems, and reading for pleasure
is the effective activity that helps students in developing their vocabulary. |
