Résumé : |
Translation is an activity of transforming a message from one language to another, it may
sound easy but in fact, it is not, the translator need to know both languages. This study is
about problems of translating idioms from English into Arabic. Idioms are fixed expressions
that contain a hidden meaning which cannot be understood by anyone, they differ from one
language to another; each language has its own idioms which is the case in English and
Arabic. To figure out the problems of translation of idioms, third year English students at
Mentouri brothers University Constantine 1 were given a test that consists of fourteen idioms
to translate them from English to Arabic. We have hypothesized that students really face
difficulties while translating idioms.
The results we obtained from the test show that most idioms were not recognized by most
students, they did not get the right meaning of these idioms, only few did. And in order to
translate, the most strategy used by students was word by word translation which leads to
extreme failure of translating. |
