Résumé : |
Inference making is considered as one of the most important strategies for reading
comprehension. It facilitates getting the implied meaning to which the writer refers implicitly and
grasping most of the written knowledge that helps students comprehend texts. This study is
conducted to investigate the significance of reading for pleasure in affecting students’ ability to
generate inferences during reading. It aims at comparing between students who are pleasure
readers and their peers who are non-pleasure readers in terms of inference generation, thus,
comprehension of the imbedded meaning in texts. The study also aims at finding possible
solutions to improve students’ ability to infer and to have better understanding, as well as to
practice more pleasure reading. It is hypothesized that if students read oftentimes and widely for
pleasure, this will enhance their inferential skills and they become able to spot contextual clues,
connect them to their background knowledge to make sense of what they read. In that light, as an
attempt to test the validity of our hypothesis and to answer our research questions, two major
instruments are used: a questionnaire and a test to collect the necessary data. Research tools are
administered to fifty-four 2nd year students of English who were chosen randomly to be the
sample of the study. Accordingly, after the analysis and comparison of the results obtained
through the questionnaire and the test, the research hypothesis has been confirmed. We can
conclude that students, who read more for pleasure, infer better the hidden meaning and, thus,
have a better understanding of texts more than students who read less or do not read at all. |
