Résumé : |
Today, English is the most influential language in communication around the world.
To learn this language, it is necessary to master the four skills: listening, speaking,
reading, and writing. Countless research works have been written about the teaching
and learning of writing. Writing is a complex process that involves several distinct
steps. Teachers use different approaches and techniques to teach and evaluate written
productions. Despite all the efforts, students fail to master this important skill because
they face many difficulties especially in grammar. Grammar is an essential aspect to
master the writing skill. This study aims to identify the grammar difficulties students
face and the major role teachers play to help students overcome these difficulties. The
questions that this research seeks to answer are what are the difficulties Second Year
students at the Department of Letters and English, University “Frères Mentouri”,
Constantine 1, face. We also seek to know whether the teachers can help them
overcome these difficulties. In this respect, the underlying hypothesis is that teachers
can help students overcome these difficulties and improve their writing skill. In order
to answer our questions and check the validity of our hypothesis, we have designed a
test to identify the students’ problems in grammar and a Teachers’ Questionnaire to
identify the main approaches and techniques teachers use to teach writing and to
identify the grammar difficulties students face. However, due to the prevailing
pandemic situation and the lockdown, the university has been closed since 15th March
2020. Consequently, the test could not take place. The Teachers’ Questionnaire was
sent and collected by my supervisor. The results of the Teachers’ Questionnaire confirm
that students face difficulties in all aspects of grammar, that complexity of grammar
rules affects the students’ acquisition of grammar, and that the students’ weak
iv
background in grammar is the basic reason for the difficulties students find. We have
also confirmed that teachers play an important role to help students overcome these
difficulties. |
