Résumé : |
From a sociolinguistic perspective, Code-switching, as a linguistic communicative
phenomenon, plays an important role in studying language variation and use by bilinguals and
multi-linguals. Many studies were held to examine the use of code-switching as a language
contact, this arose a conflict between scholars on whether or not this phenomenon is
beneficial in the process of learning English as a foreign language. The focus of this
dissertation lies in the resulting mixture of languages through one piece of speech in a specific
setting, to illustrate the main aims of this research which are the reasons behind the use of
code switching by students inside the classroom as well as investigating the attitudes
ofteachers of English at University Frères Mentouri, Constantine 1 towards the use of codeswitching in their classes. It also aims at identifying the advantages and disadvantages of
code-switching. Accordingly, we hypothesize that if EFL teachers use code-switching
intentionally and effectively in the classroom, this would facilitate learning for their first year
students. To check this hypothesis, a questionnaire was administered to 17 English as foreign
language teachers at the Department of English, University of Frères Mentouri, Constantine 1.
The theoretical part consists of a number of definitions, types, and causes to code-switching
along with some other similar phenomena. The methodological part consists of a
questionnaire that was administered to the sample of the study in order to investigate their
attitudes towards the use of code-switching inside the EFL classrooms. The findings revealed
thatsome teachers believe that the use of CS is advantageous as it fulfill students and teachers’
needs; conversely, other teachers emphasize the use of English alone inside the classroom. |
