Résumé : |
Collocations are one of the linguistic phenomena prevalent in all human languages, and one of
the crucial aspects of the language, which are arbitrary and unpredictable words combination.
Collocations are widely deemed as a source of confusion for students of English as a foreign
language. On the light of this fact, this study seeks to investigate the collocational knowledge
among first year undergraduate students of English at University Des Frères Mentouri,
Constantine1, uncover the factors which affect learners‟ use of verb+noun collocations, and
raise teachers‟ and learners‟ awareness of the importance of teaching and learning
collocations. Accordingly, we hypothesized that insufficient knowledge of collocations may
impede first year students‟ production of verb+noun lexical collocations which results in
making collocational errors. The study was conducted on designing online questionnaires and
submitting them to the sample of nineteen undergraduate students of first year, and to seven
teachers of different modules from the department of letters and English language. Besides,
the descriptive method was adopted to analyze the research results. The findings of the
questionnaires confirmed the research hypothesis, and revealed that insufficient knowledge of
collocations impedes first year students‟ production of verb+noun lexical collocations in
addition to the influence of the first/second languages and the shortage of language
vocabulary, which in turn results in making collocational errors. Therefore, language
instructors should attach great importance to teaching collocations |
