Résumé : |
Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Slaughterhouse-Five engages in the depiction of the horrors of
WWII in general and its psychological consequences in particular. Through a blend of fiction and
truth, the novel is both entertaining and informative. Employing different narrative strategies,
Vonnegut portrays war trauma in a complex fragmented set of mini narratives. Vonnegut uses the
protagonist Billy Pilgrim to narrate his personal war experience in Dresden, Germany as prisoner
of war (POW). Thus, using his absurd protagonist, and unconventional narrative techniques,
Vonnegut portrays the inside mind of the victim of war trauma. This study provides an analysis
of the psychological condition of Billy Pilgrim, and describes the effect of war trauma by
showing symptoms of a Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Based on the psychological
theories on trauma and trauma narrative, this study also demonstrates that war trauma is reflected
not only through the themes of absurdism and determinism, but also using postmodern science
fiction narrative strategies. |
