Résumé : |
Language is more than externally expressing and communicating internal thoughts. Learning
a foreign language goes beyond memorizing words and understanding basic grammar rules.
Being able to utter, for example ‘lemon’ and ‘glass’ in the foreign language, does not mean
you will be able to order lemonade in a coffee shop in the foreign country. There is more to
establishing a conversation with native speakers than what we find in dictionaries. Having a
cultural background may prove to be beneficial for foreign language performance, as
language and culture have always influenced one another. It is close to impossible to think
that one could use and master a foreign language without understanding and being aware of
the cultural element and cultural codes that the target language holds. The aim of this study is
to investigate the relationship between language and culture as well as the importance and
indispensability of incorporating cultural awareness in foreign language learning/teaching.
The underlying hypothesis is that if teachers acknowledged the significance of culture in
foreign language classrooms and emphasized the learners’ cultural awareness, the learners
would develop their foreign language performance. In order to test this hypothesis, we
designed an interview with two teachers at the ICIL (Istanbul and Constantine Institute of
Languages), and a questionnaire for the learners of English at this institute. The positive
effectiveness of inserting cultural awareness and acknowledging the importance of culture in
foreign language classrooms is highlighted throughout this study. The teachers’ answers in the
interview and the learners’ perspectives regarding the relationship between language and
culture has led to confirming our set hypothesis. |
