Résumé : |
The present research investigates the possible relationship between students’ oral
performance and writing performance. To appropriately address this issue, two questions
were proposed, the first one; is there is a correlation between the oral performance and
writing performance? The second one; do students perform better in speaking or in
writing? Eventually, two hypotheses were generated, the alternative hypothesis which
states that there is a relationship between students’ oral performance and their writing
performance, and the null hypothesis that denies the existence of this relation. To properly
answer our research questions and test the hypotheses we needed a well-constructed study.
Hence, 40 students of Third Year from the Department of English of Constantine 1
University were selected to serve as the sample of this research. The data were gathered by
means of a questionnaire and a correlational test. The students’ questionnaire was used
mainly to gather data regarding students’ attitude, problems, and factors that could
influence their oral and writing performance. The second tool was the correlational test. It
was the most important step that would give the study more meaning. Grades of the same
students who participated in the questionnaire in the modules of written and oral
expression were put into a test. Ultimately, after analyzing the data from the questionnaire
and the correlational test, the findings have revealed that, Firstly; there is a correlation
between the writing performance and the oral performance of students. Secondly, no
significant difference in performance was reported between students’ oral and writing
performance. All of which led to the denial of the null hypothesis and the acceptance of the
alternative hypothesis. |
