Code-switching is a clearly manifested in bilingual communities, and education is not
an exception. In Algerian Secondary schools for instance, teachers as well as students
tend to switch into French or Arabic when they teach/learn English. Hence the aim of
the current study is to discern how teachers and learners in EFL settings do code
switching, and the reasons behind it, and its merits if they are any. Hence, it is
hypothesized that teachers might find it necessary to code switch for clarifying some
sorts of information which could be of a great utility for facilitating the learning
process. In order to check the validity of the set hypothesis, we relied on classroom
observation and questionnaires as main tools of data collection. The former has the
aim of checking how teachers and students code switch in both foreign languages and
scientific stream classrooms. The latter has the purpose of investigating teachers and
students‟ attitudes towards the use of code switching in classrooms. The obtained
results revealed that teachers sometimes resort to either Arabic or French code switch,
especially to explain difficult vocabulary and to clarify difficult concepts although it
has been noticed that they do code switching with foreign languages learners more
than they do it with scientific stream students. In addition, students tend to rely on
either Arabic or French to front their fears, lack of self -confidence, and limited
vocabulary stock that prevents them from expressing themselves freely. Both teachers
and learners were in favor of code switching that can be used as a means to facilitate
the learning process. Some implications have been put forward in this regard. |
