Résumé : |
Writing in EFL context is considered as a difficult and demanding process. One of the
challenges faced by Algerian students while writing is the production of texts free from
grammar errors. The present paper aims to find out and analyze the most common
grammatical difficulties faced by third year University students at the English Department of
Frére Mentouri Constantine 1, University. In addition to that, this research has other
objectives like; it aims to identify the causes behind these difficulties, and it investigates the
efficacy of some in class teachers' strategies used in an attempt to eliminate the most
prominent grammar errors among students. Consequently, the researcher hypothesize that the
absence of grammar guidance in third year written expression University English classes is
the main cause of most grammar errors produced by students of English. In other words, if
students are provided with more training on how to identify and rectify the grammar errors
within their writing production then they will be producing grammar errors free text. The data
of this research are collected by means of two tools the questionnaire and the test. The first
questionnaire is administered to written expression teachers at the English Department. It is
designed to identify the strategies they use in their classes in order to deal with the problem of
grammar errors. The second questionnaire is directed to students in order to examine their
assumption and knowledge towards with grammar in particular and writing in general. The
test is destined to verify students' grammar background, to investigate the most common
grammar errors learners' face in academic writing. The results have confirmed the hypothesis;
hence, they reveal that most of the grammar errors committed by the participants are a
consequence of their in unfamiliarity of grammar rules application, as well as a lack of
exposure to grammar. |
