Résumé : |
The present study seeks to investigate students’ attitudes towards developing the speaking skill
through the use of self-regulated leaning at the department of English at the University of
Constantine 1, Algeria. We are interested to know Master One students’ opinions, awareness
and application towards the use of self-regulation strategy since they have been studying
English for four years, i.e., they are more familiar with the learning process and they are aware
of the importance to develop the speaking skill. So, this research is an attempt to discover the
difficulties that usually handicap students from developing their speaking. It investigates how
learners develop their oral skill through self-regulated learning, and to what extent they
know/apply this strategy. This study aims as well at finding out whether students noticed any
development in their speaking through its application. To test the research hypothesis, which
assumes that the more students use the strategy of self-regulated learning, the better their
speaking skill will be, a sample of forty (40) Master One students is randomly chosen. A
questionnaire is submitted to students as a data gathering tool which helps us in exploring
students’ attitudes and opinions concerning the use of self-regulation strategy as a means of
improving the speaking skill. After the data analysis, the results show that students hold a
positive attitude towards self-regulated learning because it affects positively their speaking skill
as they reported. Thus, the research hypothesis has been confirmed. On this basis, it is
recommended that some courses should be devoted to the study of self-regulated learning, in
order to study the strategy in depth, and be aware of all phases of self-regulated learning so that
students can make an effective use of it. In addition, teachers can be very helpful by teaching
methods of self-regulated learning, it is important that these methods would be the focus of
attention in all educational areas |
