Review on Writing Transitional Signals. |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the significance of transitional signals in
academic writing. It aims first to investigate the use of transitional signals in 2nd year students’
writing essays and their relevance , and second to explore whether students are aware of the
importance that such transitional linkers play in their writings, or not. To achieve these goals,
we hypothesize that an adequate use of the transitional signals in the students’ essays writing
lead to a better written production. To test the validity of our research hypothesis, two main
tools have been used: a questionnaire and a corpus based study. The questionnaire was
administered to a sample of teachers specialized in teaching written expression at the
Department of Letters and the English Language, University of Constantine 1. The second tool,
based on a corpus study, is concerned with the analysis of a collection of 13 written essays of
2nd year students at the same university. The results revealed that students encounter some
difficulties in inserting transitional words appropriately, and they are familiar with only few of
these signals more than the others. Therefore, students need extensive practice on the use of the
transitional devices so that they will learn how to apply them adequately, and enhance their
writing skill and performance as well. |
