Résumé : |
The present study seeks to investigate the difficulties students may face when they translate
Arabic proverbs into English and vice versa and the methods used to find the suitable
equivalent in the target language. The data of the study consists of twelve proverbs ( six
arabic proverbs and the other ones are english proverbs) which translated by thirty First year
Master students of English, at university Mentouri Constantine. The aims are to examine the
type of difficulty First year Master students face while translating proverbs and try to suggest
solutions and identify strategies that may help to avoid these difficulties. In this respect, a test
made up of six English proverbs and six Arabic ones is given to First year Master students to
be translated. The results show that there are different problems in the process of translating
proverbs from English into Arabic and vice versa. Moreover, the findings show that the
translation into the first language is more successful than into foreign language. They also
confirm the hypothesis and reveal that ; First literal translation is the most reliable method in
the students translation, and the use of other translation strategies is limited and some of them
did not even translate. Second, language and culture specificity of proverbs affects students‟
productions negatively. Thus, translational competence which requires wide linguistic and
cultural knowledge is the significant element for successful translation. |
