Résumé : |
The purpose of this work is to explore the students’ code-mixing of the British and
American accents. In order to carry out the present study, fifteen (15) first year students of
English at Frères Mentouri Constantine 1University were chosen as a sample. The
students were previously recorded while taking their oral examination in the year
We hypothesize that EFL students in the department of English at the University of
Frères Mentouri Constantine 1 code-mix both the American and British Varieties. To test
the validity of the hypothesis, we selected 15 first year students randomly among a
number of recordings that were made available for us.
The recordings were analyzed to check the presence of features of British and
American English in the speech of the students with focus on rhoticity, the production of
the lot vowel and that of the /t/ sound. The obtained results were analyzed quantitatively.
Findings from this study indicate that the students code-mix the two accents and this
confirms our hypothesis. The findings also show a predominance of American accent features |
