Grammatical words are one area that attracts researchers’ attention, since they
differ from one language to another and they are meaningful only in the language they belong
to. For this reason, these words arise many problems in the course of learning. This research is
an attempt to shedlight on the reasons that lie behind the failure of translating Arabic
prepositions correctly into English by foreign English learners. The aim of the current work is
to find out the kinds of errors made by foreign learners in the use of prepositions, and to
investigate whether the mother language has a negative influence on the students’
performance when using this grammatical category.
To examine our hypothesis, a test is given to thirty students belonging to third year
LMD students at the English Department, Mentouri University, Constantine. This test consists
of 15 Arabic sentences containing prepositions that the students are asked to translate into
English to assess the way they render the special or temporal meaning they express. Results
showed that mother tongue was the major source of EFL learners' errors. The analysis of the
students’ answers shows that Algerian learners are more likely to be subject to negative
transfer than they are to positive transfer when translating simple prepositions from Standard
Arabic into English. In addition, FEL commit errors of miss-selection more than they commit
other kinds of errors like omission and addition. These results confirm our hypothesis. Thus,
Algerian learners rely on Standard Arabic and Algerian Arabic prepositional knowledge in
order to acquire an understanding of prepositional usage in English and transfer them. |
