Résumé : |
This dissertation deals with the disillusion of the American Dream in Death of Salesman by Arthur Miller. Having a clear idea about the notion of the American Dream is essential for a deep understanding of both American culture and literature. It refers to the ideals of the American nation such as democracy, equality, freedom and the pursuit of happiness. Throughout history, Americans attempted to realize their dream of success, with an extraordinary optimism and a blind faith in this dream which was created in the sixteenth century. The American Dream has been shaped by the people from various periods with some different perspectives; puritans were seeking religious freedom; black slaves were in pursuit of equality with white men, and twentieth century men were in search of material success. However, all these perspective although somehow different share one common aim; that of having a better future. Yet, the ways people pursuit their dreams have been different through generations as many changes took place in society, economically, politically and socially. My aim in this paper is to analyze and explain the different concepts of the American Dream throughout history and concentrate on the concept of the American Dream of the twentieth century within the context of the play. The play is about a salesman, Willy Loman, whose perception of the American Dream is very different from his father and his brother Ben and his father. Although Ben Loman and Father Loman adopted the concept of American Dream that believes in the importance of virtue and hard work, Willy Loman is rather persuaded that appearance and being well-liked are all what is required to be a successful businessman. However, these false concepts led him to melancholy and finally to death. Death of a salesman is a play that depicts the transformation of the American Dream into a nightmare because of the domination of capitalism and people's misinterpretation of the real meaning of the American Dream, by admiring exclusively the materialistic aspects of the modern life. |
