Résumé : |
Recent research findings assert the importance of the psychological components in
learning with an increasing focus on the role of personality variables such as ‘self-esteem’ to
improve students’ speaking a foreign language(FL). The literature shows that effective learning
begins with promoting learners’ self-esteem, a key ingredient for cultivating autonomous and
successful speakers. Within this scope, this research attempts to answer a number of questions
that are relevant to the role of teachers and learners themselves in promoting ‘self-esteem’ in
order to get better achievements in the middle school courses and the English language courses
(ELC) among a sample of 4th year Middle school learners. Thus, to conduct this research, we
hypothesize that when learners display a positive self-esteem, their general academic oral
achievement in English as a foreign language will be more satisfactory than the oral performance
of those learners with a lower level of self-esteem. The study determines the need to raise
awareness about the importance of self-esteem in the speaking (FL) process and in learning of
it.In order to investigate this relationship, two questionnaires are administered to fourth year
middle school learners, in order to gather data to carry out an analysis of the results, which are
supposed to enable us to see the impact of learners’ self-esteem on their speaking performance.
The data collected from the questionnaires and the analysis of results obtained allows us to see
the positive effects and the importance of learners’ self-esteem in increasing their speaking
performance and encouraging learners to speak during the English course |
