Résumé : |
During the process of learning a foreign/second language, students face different problems
and obstacles; among which is anxiety. Anxiety is a psychological and effective factor that
prevents students from achieving their learning goals. The present study attempts to
investigate the impact of anxiety on the speaking skill proficiency of students of English. The
study aims to realize two main objectives; first, to identify the causes of anxiety of 3rd year
students in the English Department in the University of Constantine 1, second, to suggest the
necessary strategies to help students overcome their anxiety and achieve better results. To
reach these aims, it has been hypothesized that the less anxious the students are the better the
speaking skill would be performed and the more they are anxious the less proficient their
spoken performance would be. To verify the validity of the hypothesis, a students‟
questionnaire and a classroom observation are used as research tools for the same sample of
students. The dissertation is mainly made of two chapters, one for the theoretical overviews
and the second for the fieldwork. The results obtained confirm that anxiety is a negative
factor that would hinder the students‟ academic achievement and exactly the speaking skill;
the research hypothesis is positively confirmed that the more students are anxious the less
speaking proficiency will be achieved. |
