Résumé : |
The intercultural pedagogy was proposed in English language teaching to train the learners to
use English as a lingua franca, to be intercultural communicators, and to successfully function
in such culturally diverse world. However, the learning process in EFL classrooms focuses
more on acquiring the linguistic side of the language without stressing the cultural aspects.
This current research, then, aimed to investigate whether emphasizing the cultural aspects
while teaching English as a foreign language would help students to develop consciousness
and awareness about self and others. Therefore, we hypothesized that if the teachers adopt
explicitly intercultural teaching, this would contribute in increasing the students’ intercultural
sensitivity. In order to verify the validity of the previously mentioned hypothesis, a
questionnaire was directed to two groups of students. The first group was composed of
students of Master 1 Foreign Language Didactics, who were exposed explicitly to
intercultural teaching; while the second group consisted of students of Master 1 Applied
Linguistics, who were not introduced explicitly to this kind of teaching. The questionnaire
provided aimed at measuring the students’ awareness of their cultural background, the impact
their own culture has on the way they view the world, and the equality of cultures, as well as
measuring their attitudes towards cultural differences. The main findings obtained revealed
that students of Didactics scored higher as regards intercultural sensitivity issues than students
of Applied Linguistics who maintained their uncompromising attitudes towards their own and
other cultures. |
