Résumé : |
This research paper is a study and an analysis of George Orwell’s dystopian novel
Nineteen Eighty-Four using certain aspects from the theory of the French philosopher Michel
Foucault Knowledge and Power. It serves to breakdown the configurations of power and
social control created by the totalitarian regime in Orwell’s novel. The authoritarian party
controls society to a degree that it makes one question the reason behind the stability of the
social body despite the treatment of their government. This dissertation aims at understanding
the influence of the Party and its strategies at holding their position as the supreme rulers and
the way they manage to control the society of Oceania. The paper analyzes the novel using
Foucault’s notion on the power of discourse and the panoptic theory for creating a disciplined
society. It serves to explain the mechanism through which the Party controls and manages
society. |
