Résumé : |
Reading is considered as an important language skill that it is defined as a complex process
based on vocabulary and strategies used according the purpose of reading. In this respect, the
present research aims at investigating first year students’ of English, Constantine University,
familiarity with reading strategies in general, and guessing the meaning of words from context
in particular. Moreover, it tends to test their ability to use this latter in reading texts. In this
respects, it is hypothesized that students who have the ability to guess from the context can
easily understand unfamiliar words in their reading process. To achieve the research
objectives, a teachers’ questionnaire, designed for first year teachers of English, and a test,
designed for 40 students under study, are used. The major findings of this study revealed
students are not introduced to reading strategies in English classes. In addition, despite their
unfamiliarity, they were able to guess the meaning of unknown words from the text in their
reading process successfully. Therefore, the research hypothesis has been confirmed |
