Nowadays, translation has become an important activity in various fields because of the
increasing need for communication and exchange with other people who speak different
languages. The present study aims at discovering the anomalies due to the false cognates’
phenomenon i.e., emphasising the aberrations resulting from mutual lexical items in French
and English. The research data was gathered through a questionnaire and a translation test to
verify the hypothesis of this study which is: ‘if EFL learners knew about the phenomenon of
false cognates, they would be able to avoid the difficulties engendered by them, and improve
the quality of their performance’. The test and the questionnaire are administered to a sample
of third year students, at the Department of English at Mentouri University, Constantine 1.
The treatment of the obtained results revealed that the false friends phenomenon which stem
from the linguistic reciprocality and students’ non-awareness constitute a crucial problem for
EFL learners. Taking into consideration the obtained results, some recommendations are
proposed to EFL students as well as to teachers in order to help them remedy the difficulties
engendered by the phenomenon. |
