This present study is about students‟ mother tongue interference when they
write in English. It consists of two chapters. Chapter one is devoted to the theoretical
part of the research. The first section presents a review of the writing skill, its three
main known approaches, and the relation between reading and writing, introduction
of the difficulties that EFL learners face when they write, and some advice for
learners to become better at writing. The second section of research includes mainly
a review of SLA, CAH, EA, and language interference. On the other hand, the
second chapter is devoted to the analysis of our collected data. The main aim of the
study is to show students‟ problems in writing as well as to focus on the
phenomenon of transferring ideas and rules from L1 (Arabic) and its influence in
their writing productions. In order to make studens write better, we hypothesized
that both making students aware of interfering their mother tongue and reading
much will lead them to become better writers. A teachers‟ questionnaire and a test
for 2nd year graduation students from the English Department were used as our
means of research to check the validity of the hypothesis and answer the research
questions. The results show that students make errors of different types and many of
them result from the interference of Arabic on their writing in English. This results
confirms out main hypothesis. Among the recommendations some teachers have
raised and that we insistingly suggest are ways which will prompt students to read
more and more so as to diminish the impact of mother tongue interference on
students‟ writing in English |
