The present study seeks to investigate the effects of using abbreviations on students writing. It
attempts to find the reasons behind using abbreviations in academic writing. Nowadays,
students are influenced a lot by technology; they are always surfing and chatting on the net.
When chatting in English, students use the informal language and thus lot of abbreviations,
and they transfer these abbreviations when they are asked to write assignments at the
university. The present work aims at investigating the reasons why students use lot of
abbreviations in academic writing, and what are the main reasons behind this phenomenon.
The study is based on two questionnaires addressed to both teachers and 3rd Year Students to
elicit their opinions about the excessive use of abbreviations. The aim of the questionnaire
administered to teachers of The English Department (University Of Constantine) was to check
their attitudes about the use of abbreviations in writing, whereas the one concerned with
students, the objective was to examine what kind of abbreviations students use mainly in their
compositions. The results of both questionnaires revealed that students tend to use
abbreviations when writing academically and they need to overcome this problem and learn to
write full words instead of abbreviations. |
