Reading is a fundamental skill in language learning. It is a means of building new vocabulary
and acquiring knowledge. For these reasons, the main purpose of our study is to investigate
the effect of skimming and scanning as two reading strategies on 3rd year secondary pupils’
reading comprehension who study English as a foreign language. This study is designed to
assess the hypothesis which states that, if reading strategies especially skimming and scanning
are taught explicitly, learners will improve their reading comprehension. In order to collect
our data, we have administrated a questionnaire to teachers of secondary school “Mouloud
Kassim Nait Belkacem”, and conducted an experiment on a group of eleven pupils in which
explicit instruction of skimming and scanning was used. This was followed by a reading
comprehension test for both the experimental group and the control group. The obtained
results from the questionnaire and the test indicate that there is a positive relationship between
those strategies and reading comprehension. i.e. skimming and scanning are two effective
strategies that enable learners to achieve reading comprehension in a short period of time |
