Rhetorical functions are konwn to be effective signals which help students to understand the meaning of scientific texts even if they do not understand all vocabulary in the text. Accordingly, the present study aims at investigating the impact of rhetorical functions in students‟ understanding of scientific texts. Therefore, we hypothesize that knowledge about rhetorical functions helps first year master Linguistics and Applied Language Studies students to understand scientific texts. This hypothesis is testified by two tools: a questionnaire and a test which have been administered, in the same session, to the intended sample of twenty 20 participants of first year master Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at Mentouri University, during the academic year 2017-2018. The analysis of the obtained findings showed that students who master the rhetorical functions of the scientific text have a high performance of understanding scientific texts which proves our hypothesis.
